Rug Size Guide for Living, Dining and Bedrooms
The right size matters as much as the design and colour of a rug. These simple rules help you find the right dimensions before you buy.
Common Persian rug sizes

Living room
At least the front legs of the sofas and chairs should sit on the rug. Leave about 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) of floor between the rug and the walls, so the floor frames the rug.
Dining room
The rug should extend about 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 in) beyond the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
Bedroom
Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends about 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) on each side, or use a pair of smaller rugs on either side of the bed.
Hallway
Choose a runner that leaves about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) of floor showing on each side.
Measure before you buy
- Measure the room and note doors and windows.
- Mark the rug's outline on the floor with masking tape.
