About this collection

A pictorial carpet (tableau rug) recreates a painting, portrait, miniature or historical scene in knots instead of brushstrokes. The finest are woven in Tabriz and nearby Sardroud, where weavers use very fine silk and kork wool at densities above 80 raj so that faces and shading read like a painting. Every change of colour is a separate knot, so a large piece can take one to two years on the loom. Pictorial rugs are made to hang on a wall, away from direct sunlight, rather than to be walked on.
