How to Care for and Clean a Persian Rug

With the right care a handwoven rug lasts for generations. These simple habits do the most to protect its colours, pile and shape.

How to Care for and Clean a Persian Rug

Vacuuming

Vacuum a wool rug once a week in the direction of the pile. Use a vacuum without a rotating beater brush, and do not vacuum the fringe. Clean a silk rug on low suction or with a soft hand brush.

Rotate the rug

Turn the rug 180 degrees every 6 to 12 months so wear and light are spread evenly.

Sunlight

Long exposure to direct sunlight fades colours. Use curtains or UV-filtering glass, and hang pictorial rugs on a wall that does not get direct sun.

Spills

  • Blot spills straight away with a clean white cloth. Do not rub.
  • Never use bleach or strong detergents.
  • Never soak a silk rug. Blot it dry and take it to a specialist cleaner.

Moths and damp

Moths attack wool in dark, undisturbed places such as under sofas. Vacuum those areas regularly and air the rug now and then in dry shade. Never lay a rug on a damp floor.

Professional washing

Have a wool rug washed by a traditional specialist every 3 to 5 years, depending on use. Silk rugs should only be washed by a specialist in fine rugs.

Storage

Never fold a rug. Roll it clean and dry, wrap it in breathable cotton (not plastic), and store it somewhere cool and dry.
