1. Handmade or machine-made?
Turn the rug over. On a hand-knotted rug you can see each knot, the pattern on the back mirrors the front, and the rows are slightly irregular. A machine-made rug has a perfectly uniform back, often with a backing layer or glue.
Check the fringe. On a hand-knotted rug the fringe is the end of the warp threads that run through the whole rug. On machine-made rugs the fringe is usually sewn or glued on.
2. Pile and foundation materials
- Wool and kork: durable, warm and right for everyday use. Kork is the soft wool from the neck and shoulders of the sheep and has more sheen.
- Silk: high sheen and fine detail, allowing very high knot densities. Best for low-traffic rooms or for hanging on a wall.
- Wool with silk highlights: the durability of wool with silk used for outlines and details.
- Cotton or silk foundation (warp and weft): a silk foundation allows finer knots and a thinner rug.
3. Natural vegetable dyes
Natural dyes such as madder, indigo, pomegranate rind and walnut husk mellow beautifully with age. Gentle shade changes across a field of one colour (abrash) are normal and a sign of hand-dyed wool. To test colourfastness, rub a damp white cloth lightly over the pile; no colour should transfer.
4. Knot density (raj)
Raj is the number of knots across 7 cm of the rug's width. Higher raj means finer detail and a longer weaving time. A high raj alone does not make a better rug: wool quality, dyes and the balance of the design matter as much. Read more about raj.
